Sorcha's father, Solmarn, is the eldest of five children born to Raneal and Sihalla.

Sorcha's aunt Shidana lives with her husband, Ayleron, in Bitra. Their only child, Dyani, lives in Ista Proper and assists Dolphincrafter Shadis in caring for his children.

Her aunt Sidhe is deceased, but is survived by her two daughters, Sihroun and Seline. Seline remains in Keroon, while Sihroun is living with Sidhe's best friends, a pair of Weyrmates at Igen Weyr.

Her aunt Solati (Solatianna) rides Blue Tukrinth at Fort Weyr.

Her uncle Si'ran (Sieduneran) rides Green Miagoth at High Reaches Weyr. He and Sorcha are close in age and are therefore more like cousins than uncle and niece. Si'ran has one daughter, Kyune, who is the result of a flight.

Solmarn joined the Vintners in Keroon because he had always had a palate for wine-tasting. As he moved through the ranks, he was recognized as quite an expert, and he is very much respected in his Craft. When he was a Journeyman, he met his future wife, Rachel. As a father, he is doting and protective, perhaps too much so. Now, in his old age, he regrets not exposing his daughters to more of Pern, as he worries that they are not prepared for life on their own.

Rachel's line is Blooded, and Faranth forbid she let anyone think otherwise. She is quite attracted to anything of value, and very much enjoys Solmarn's respected position. Underneath her frappery, she does sincerely love her husband - after all, she could have married back to someone of Blood again, but she chose him instead. Still, she demands the finest of things, and expects her daughters to feel the same way.

Rachel and Solmarn's eldest daughter, Mariel, is the apple of her mother's eye. She remains with her parents in Keroon, for although she has many suitors, she's in no hurry to spoil all the fun by making a decision. In Sorcha's absence, she's trying to wrap her heads around bookkeeping, but with little luck.

Roma is the typical middle daughter. When Sorcha and her sisters were children, Roma was incredibly demanding and took up much of Rachel's time -- and patience. As she grew older, though, she has become considerably calmer. Much of this is due to her Weyrmate, Telgarian S'cal, with whom she has two sons, Rosc and Romel.

Sorcha was a precocious youngster and hungered after numbers and letters. She demanded much of Rachel, begging her mother to read to her, show her, teach her, take her here and there. Solmarn was a far more patient teacher, though he used Sorcha for his own purposes -- he taught Sorcha to balance his finances, and she took to the tedious work like a duck to water.

From that tender age onwards, Sorcha worked for her father until she hit the age of 17 and realized that she was now too old to Apprentice to one of the local Crafts. Disappointed, she begged her parents to allow her to leave Keroon and see more of the world, promising that she could return at any time to help them out, should they need her. Reluctantly, Solmarn released his youngest daughter into the world. Rachel loaded her down with marks, fancy dresses and jewelry and demanded that she find a suitor. Her sisters wished her the best of luck, and Mariel demanded that she come back soon because she could never make the numbers work the way Sorcha could.

On her own, Sorcha managed to get herself to Ista island, where she got herself a cot at the Hold and set about her exploring. She made few friends, being something of a social retard, but did befriend a young woman named Minka. The two of them ran errands together, often finding themselves at the Weyr. It was there that Sorcha saw her first Clutching when Ciciath and Kwazarenth hit the Sands of Ista Weyr.

That night, Minka was Searched. A few days following, Sorcha, too, found herself sporting a new white knot. More and more Candidates arrived, including a young Istan Herder, Rylen, who soon became the object of Sorcha's affections. Both youngsters are cripplingly shy, and it was only on the day before the Hatching that they grew bold enough to admit their feelings for each other. Rylen cut off his braid and gave it to Sorcha as a sign of his feelings, and she returned the favor by presenting him with her hair ribbon.
